Roads

Contact the Road Commissioner at roadcommissioner@swedenmaine.org or submit your information here to report any unsafe conditions. For emergency situations, please call 911.

Downed trees are not uncommon in Sweden. Call 911 to report the problem and location; they will get in contact with our Fire Department and dispatch someone to assist. Messages left at the Town Office are only retrieved on the days the office is open, so for the quickest resolution, call 911. If power lines are involved, call 911 immediately and avoid the area. Note that our fire station cannot remove trees if power lines are entangled, only CMP can do that.

Sweden will repair town maintained/town owned roads as quickly as we are able to. Our crew is great, but severe storms may mean it will take a few days, depending on the severity of the damage. Bridgton Road, Lovell Road, Waterford Road, and Knight’s Hill Road are all maintained by Maine DOT, and they are responsible for repairing damage to these roadways. Private roads are the responsibility of the property owners abutting the road. If your private road was damaged in a severe storm, there may be FEMA repair money available, but the property owners must submit claims themselves.

The Town is responsible for keeping all Sweden roads (with the exception of private roads and drives) safe and passable during snow and icing conditions. Plowing and/or salt and sanding will start at roughly 4:00am in order to have roads safe for school bus and commuter traffic. Variances may be made to prevent plow damage to roadways if the ground is not frozen.

Code Enforcement

Provide the nearest address of the activity  to the code officer. Take a picture if possible, especially of the logger’s vehicle and if it is on a shoreline or adjacent to a water body. Most logging operations have a ‘yard’ where they load. Often their Harvest number is posted in this location.

Take pictures, if possible, and provide the information to the code officer. Be specific.

Most new structures need a permit, unless you are locating a small shed (less than 150SF) outside of the shoreland zone. Repairs usually don’t need a permit, but if significant, contact the code officer.

Do not ignore the notice. Contact the code officer as soon as you can.

In case of Emergency...

Report the issue to CMP immediately. The sooner they know, the sooner they can send repair crews. In the case of a severe winter storm and multi-day power outage, the Town office has a generator and will be open to warm up and to recharge devices. Sweden residents come together to help each other out in difficult times, if you need general assistance during a power outage, contact the Town office and we will try and connect you with someone who can assist. Sign up for Sweden emergency alerts, and contact 911 for any life threatening emergency.

If you are trapped and in a dangerous situation, call 911 immediately. For less urgent reports, contact the Road Commissioner and/or the Emergency Management Director ASAP so we can get crews there to either make the road passable, or put up blockades.  After severe storms, the Town will drive roads to inspect for damage, but the sooner we know what to expect, the sooner we can direct resources there to address the problem.

Sweden is served by the Oxford County Sheriff’s department. Call them at:  (207) 743-9554. The Sheriff would be the appropriate department to call for noise or disturbance complaints, domestic incidents.  The Fish and Game Warden can be contacted at: (800) 452-4664
