Incorporated in 1813, Sweden is located in Oxford County, Maine, United States. The population was 507 at the 2021 census.<\/p>\n\n

Set among hills, forests and ponds, Sweden has a total area of 29.74 square miles, of which, 28.82 square miles of it is land, and 0.92 square miles is water.\u00a0 The largest bodies of water are Stearns Pond, Keyes Pond, and Webber Pond.<\/p>\n\n

Sweden borders the towns of\u00a0Waterford\u00a0to the northeast,\u00a0Lovell\u00a0to the northwest,\u00a0Fryeburg\u00a0to the southwest, and\u00a0Bridgton\u00a0to the southeast.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Sweden is governed by three elected Selectmen, who meet on the second and forth Tuesday of every month, a Planning Board, which meets monthly, a Code Enforcement Officer, and others. The Annual Town Meeting is held in March, at which warrants are raised before the residents of Sweden for the election of officials, town business affairs, and expenditures of money.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Although the town has never had a central commercial center, the mid 1800’s were considered a boom time with multiple stores, a blacksmith shop, cooperages, a post office and even a bowling alley.\u00a0 The Sweden Historical Society has extensive historical records and documents, and has catalogued Sweden buildings build pre-1900 that are still standing.<\/p>

Today, the area near Sweden\u2019s Four Corners (intersection of Rt 93 and Waterford Road) is where the Sweden Town Office, Town Meeting Hall, Historical Society, and Community Church\/Food Pantry are located. The Town is predominately residential, and commercial activities have been limited to low-impact businesses including timber harvesting, apple growing, and two summer recreational camps for children.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
